Do you wonder which colours to go for when choosing a piece of art? should you go by your favourite colours or your partners? the latest fashion colours? and really only you can know, because art is very personal. We don't all wear the same colours on our clothes, and we are very individual when we pick our style of clothes. We can easily accept that we want to wear our own style, and it is fine if our friends have different taste. Our house or apartment is also different to what our friends have decided to live in, so our furniture, interior design and art will naturally be the same.
If you and your partner has agreed on who gets to decide the wall decoration then its easy, if not then perhaps you can take turns deciding on the art. I have even experienced a couple that wanted both their favourite colours in one piece of art. It was possible because it was an abstract piece they had commissioned me to paint. Couples often complement each other in many areas, so why not it colour choice too. This is great for the artist, because they will have to buy one for her and one for him.
You may consider what each colour means and here is some very basic colour symbolism.
White: pure, innocent, peace
Black: sophisticated, timeless,
Yellow: happy, warmth, motivation, positive, betrayal
Orange: fun, vitality, youth
Blue: trustworthy, responsible, security
Green: wealth, serenity, nature, prestige
Red: energetic, attention, aggressive, love,
Purple: mystery, spirituality, royalty, sophistication
Brown: natural, earth like, simplistic
Of course there are many more, I am thinking about what my mother said that if your husband gives you yellow roses it means he has been unfaithful. I don't think I have heard anyone else say that, so maybe an old wives tale. but it does make sense since betrayal is on the list for yellow.
Lots of artists have heard the comment this painting is beautiful, but it doesn't match the couch, and to be perfectly honest I have never thought of any couches when painting. It may not be the couch but some other pieces of furniture. I do commissions now and again, but it is more fun to just follow my inspiration and use the colours I feel like using at the time.
