My mother kept my first painting hanging on the wall for many years, and I am grateful for that. I was in school and as I remember it 15 years old. My teacher explained to me that I could mix colours, before that I had used the paint straight our of the paint tube. My chosen subject was a stream of water running through the landscape. I used oil paint, and dont think there was any other options if I was going to paint. It took several lessons in school to complete, but I did 2 more in that class. Mom kept all 3!
I took a break from painting after those 3, perhaps because I didnt have any paints at home, nor did anyone I knew at the time. I lived in a small town, and no internet so i didnt even think to find out where I could buy paints. In my twenties I was in London and did some drawing now and then. My boyfriend bought me some paints. I found a book about painting and started painting.
Later on I did lots of art classes, but my book got me started. I continued to spend hours painting and learning. Not that long ago I painted one of my bigger paintings, it measures 150x200 cm and again a stream, this time running through the forest.
If you are just starting out painting, then keep going, have fun, enjoy the process. It is not about how many other people like what you do. It is about you and enjoying to paint, skills will improve as you keep painting.
